Chapter 22: The Tackle Box

I called Hedy from the breakfast table.

She picked up on the first ring.

"Do you still have Gran's pictures? The ledger? On your iPad?"

"Good morning to you too."

"Hedy."

"Of course I have them. I read them every night. Your Gran's handwriting puts me to sleep better than the pills." She paused. "Why?"

I told her.

Hedy didn't say anything for a while.

"Marlys has the book," she said finally.

"Since five this morning."

"In a bathrobe."

Hedy made a sound.

"Don't you dare touch my iPad," she said to somebody in the room with her. "Kari, I'm sending them. All of them. Every page. Then I'm sending them to your lawyer, and the sheriff, and my sister's son who's good with computers."

"Hedy, you don't have to."

"I added it up, you know," she said. "Every line. Lying here with nothing to do. Four hundred twelve thousand, one hundred and six dollars."

My throat closed up.

"Forty-five years," Hedy said. "And that woman in a bathrobe thinks she can put it in her stove."
