Chapter 26: Half
"No," I said.
It was the first word I'd managed since the calculator.
The examiner looked up from Marlys's chair.
Leif didn't look up at all. He was still reading his grandfather's name.
"No to what?" he said.
"Whatever you're about to do. No."
"I haven't done anything."
"You've got the face."
"This is my face."
The sheriff cleared his throat from the doorway.
"Folks. It's midnight. Fight about money at home, like everybody else."
We fought about it at home.
Not that night. That night I lay awake on top of my covers and listened to the last firecrackers going off across the lake.
At seven the next morning Leif was at the kitchen table with a yellow legal pad and his phone on speaker.
The schoolteachers were eating oatmeal at the end of the table, trying to look like they weren't listening.
Hedy was propped against the sugar bowl on the iPad, in her sister's kitchen, not trying at all.
"Dad," Leif said. "She's here. Say it again."
His father's voice came out of the phone, deep and slow.
