Chapter 6: Stakes
"There's no demolition," I said. "There's no sale."
"There's a signed agreement," the woman from Northshore said. "We do our surveys early. It saves everyone time."
"I didn't sign it."
"Then you'll have a very interesting summer."
She clicked her pen and left.
On Tuesday at seven in the morning, a white pickup and a survey van pulled onto my lawn.
Four men in orange vests got out with tripods and a bundle of wooden stakes with pink ribbon.
They had already pounded six of them in when I came out with my coffee.
One was in Gran's peony bed.
I went inside and came out with the deed in its plastic sleeve from the fire safe, walked to the end of the dock and sat down.
"Ma'am," the crew chief called. "We need to get a reading from the waterline."
"This is my dock."
"We have a work order."
"I have a deed."
Leif came down the porch steps with a mug in each hand.
He gave me one and looked at the stakes.
Then he looked at them longer.
"Can I see your work order?" he asked the crew chief.
"Who are you?"
"A guest. I like maps."
The crew chief handed him the clipboard because it was easier than arguing.
Leif read the plat for a long time.
He walked to the corner of the lawn by the lilac hedge.
He got down on his knees in the wet grass and dug with his fingers under the hedge.
Leif stood up and brushed off his hands.
"There's an iron pin here. The original 1924 corner. It's on your plat."
"So?"
"So your stakes start forty feet east of it. Half of them are on the neighbor's lot." He pointed. "That one is in the public boat access. You're surveying the county's lake."
The crew chief looked at the plat.
