Chapter 9: The Bathhouse
Sorrel's POV
For three days I watched him lie to me about a wooden wolf.
He didn't mention it again, and neither did I.
He came to my room twice, and both times I told him to go away, and both times he went.
On the fourth day I followed him to the training yard.
He was sparring with six of his men at once, bare to the waist in the cold, and I stood on the wall above the yard and watched every one of them hit the dirt.
When it was done he walked to the bathhouse at the end of the yard and went in.
I waited a moment and followed.
The bathhouse was a long stone room filled with steam, with a pool sunk into the floor and a single lamp on the wall.
He sat in the water to his waist with his head tipped back and his eyes shut.
"You're limping less," he said, without opening them.
"I'm not here about my knee."
"I know why you're here."
"Do you?"
His eyes opened. They were very green in the lamplight.
"You've been watching me for four days," he said. "Anselm says the cook has started saving you the good bread."
"I wanted to see what you do when you think nobody's looking."
"And?"
"You fight six men, and you don't blink."
"You could say that."
"Mostly you look like you haven't slept since I came."
He went still in the water.
I let the silence stand, because I had learned that from him, and I untied my robe.
It fell open and I let it drop.
Steam wrapped my shoulders. My hair stuck to my neck.
He stared. I watched his throat work.
"Sorrel."
"I walked here," I said. "That counts. You said it counts."
"I said it was the only way I would touch you."
