I called my board chair back from the bathroom with the fan running, so Dinah could sleep.
"Tavish's lawyer phoned three of our directors tonight," she said. "He used the words related-party transaction."
"What does that mean in English?"
"That you secretly ran money through a company you now want to buy."
She let that sit.
"He's also been on the phone to the Air Force."
"Of course he has."
"Rex, is it true?"
"The money came from Loyd Hartung. It started when I was twelve."
The line was quiet for a while.
"Then say so," she said, "before somebody else says it for you."
"I'm saying it at eight."
"Where?"
"Where everyone can see."
By seven-thirty the next morning the plant gate looked like a parade.
Two television trucks idled on the shoulder with their masts up.
The woman in the green parka stood on the curb with a microphone and a cameraman.
Behind her, spread across the road in work jackets and hats, stood the crew.
