Chapter 18: Locked Out

Loyd was sitting up in the dark when we got there.

He had the call light in his fist, and a nurse was scolding him from the door.

"Grady phoned me," he said. "Twenty minutes ago."

"What did he say?" Lorna asked.

She stood at the foot of the bed with snow melting off her coat.

"That you were out of the building. That your key card is dead and your office is empty."

"And that your apartment goes back to the company at noon."

"It's a company lease," Lorna said. "I should have known."

"He said, 'Now you've got both of us on the street.'" Loyd's voice shook. "He hung up laughing."

Lorna sat down in the visitor's chair.

She didn't say anything, and she didn't reach for his hand.

But she took off her coat and folded it over her knees.

After a while her head tipped back against the wall.

Loyd watched her sleep for a long time.

"Go home, son," he said to me, softly. "Both of you. I've got her."

The surgeon released him at noon on Wednesday, against her better judgment and with a nurse on a six-hour contract.
