Chapter 7: The Tour Bus

The contract came by courier on Thursday.

Twenty percent of every song, signed by all four brothers and witnessed in red ink.

Emile read it standing in the kitchen with a spoon of gumbo in his other hand.

"This says back royalties," he said.

"It does," Gaston said, at the stove.

"This number has too many zeroes."

"It has exactly the right number. We counted."

Emile put the spoon down, because his hand had started to shake.

Thibault came up behind him, wrapped both arms around his waist and rested his chin on his shoulder.

"Don't cry in the gumbo," Thibault murmured. "It's Maw-Maw's recipe."

"I'm not crying."

"Good. You've got a show to get to."

The show was in Baton Rouge, in an arena that held eleven thousand.

The band called it a quiet night.

Emile stood in the wings in a borrowed black jacket, and he was fairly sure he was about to die.

"It's too big," he whispered.

"It's a small one," Thibault said.

"Is it supposed to," Emile shifted, and winced, "feel like this?"

"Like what?"
