Chapter 18: All Four

I took the pen.

Their mother made a small, quiet sound, the first sound I'd ever heard her make that wasn't a sentence.

I capped it and put it back in her hand.

"No," I said.

"Miss Ware..."

"Mrs. Chisholm." I turned to the president. "Ask your daughter where Whit's down payment came from. Then decide where you stand."

His face changed.

"Stand wherever you like Saturday. I'll be the one holding the microphone."

The president looked at the folder, and then at me, and for the first time he was actually thinking.

Their mother did not.

"Then you'll stand alone," she said.

"No," Ewan said, from the window. "She won't."

Bram walked to the elevator and held the doors open.

"Mother," he said. "Get out."

She went.

The president picked up his folder and went after her, slower, frowning at the floor.

The doors closed.

Nobody spoke for a moment.

I stood in the middle of the room in Bram's shirt with my bare feet on the carpet and my heart going like a hammer.

"I'm not choosing," I said.

Four faces turned to me.

"I know that's what you're all waiting for. Which one. Like a ring at the end of a game show."

"I'm married to Ewan. I'm staying married to Ewan. And I'm not giving up any of you."

Cian sat down very slowly on the arm of the sofa.

"Any," he said.

"Any. All four. That's the deal. You have to choose it too, or there's no deal."

"That's insane," said Cian, and his voice cracked in the middle.

"You told me yourself. 'This is a lot.' First thing you ever said to me as Cian."

"I meant the situation, not the..." He waved his hands at all of us. "The structure."

"I'm in," said Bram.

Everyone looked at him.

"What?" He folded his arms. "I want her. I'm not giving her up so Cian can feel less weird."

"I don't feel weird," Cian said. "I feel like a quarter."

"You're not a quarter," I said. "You're Cian. There's only one of those. Trust me, I checked."

He laughed, helplessly, and put his face in his hands.
