Chapter 21: In Front of Her Sons

She didn't wait for anyone to hand her anything.

She walked to the foot of the stage steps, lifted the hem of her silver gown, and climbed them.

Bram moved half a step to block her.

"Let her," I said.

He let her.

She stopped in front of me, and held out her hand, palm up, for the microphone.

I looked at it.

Then I gave it to her, because six hundred people were already watching her hand.

She turned to the room.

For a second she didn't say anything at all, and I saw her fingers whiten on the microphone.

"Twenty-four years ago, somebody took my son Fenn," she said. "He came home because the men who took him found out there were four."

The room went silent in a different way than before.

"Every birthday since, I've ordered one cake, with one name on it, and it wasn't any of theirs."

Beside me, Cian said, very quietly, "Chocolate."

"None of us even like chocolate," Bram said, just as quietly.
