Chapter 24: Wyatt Chisholm

Ewan read it over my shoulder.

"He didn't ask me," he said.

"He doesn't ask. He tells you the truth and waits."

"I'm your husband. Technically I should be consulted about weddings."

"You're consulted," I said. "Are you coming?"

He took my left hand and turned the signet ring on my thumb so the L faced up.

"1:40," he said. "I'll be early. I'm always early to that one."

At 1:35 on Saturday morning, I stood outside the little white chapel on the Strip in my green dress.

The plastic flower arch over the door was lit pink.

The sign in the window said OPEN 24 HOURS.

It looked smaller than I remembered, and sillier, and I loved it so much my chest hurt.

I'd taken the signet ring off for the first time in three weeks.

It was in my palm, warm.

The door opened before I touched it.

The officiant stood there in a lavender suit, the same man, the same bored eyes.

They weren't bored tonight.

"Four of them," he said to me, in a low, awed voice. "I've been doing this nineteen years. I've never had four."

"First time for everybody," I said.

The chapel had six rows of white benches.

Their mother sat in the front one, in pearls and a cardigan, with a tissue already in her hand.

The bookstore owner sat beside her, fast asleep, her purse in her lap.

Nobody was in the back pew.

And at the front, under the plastic flowers, stood four men in four different suits.

Ewan in gray, the watch on his right wrist.

Cian in a blue so loud it was practically a joke, grinning.

Fenn in black, no contacts, his wire glasses on.

Bram in a dark suit that fought his shoulders, his scarred hand at his side.

Not one of them was dressed as Wyatt.

I walked up the aisle alone, because I'd decided to.

Halfway, Cian whistled through his teeth.

"Don't," I said.

"I'm nervous! Let me whistle!"

Their mother laughed into her tissue.

I stopped in front of them.

The officiant cleared his throat, looked at his book, closed it, and looked at me.

"I don't have anything for this," he said. "You'd better run it."

So I did.

"Same order as the first night," I said. "Each of you. Your hour, and your vow. Your own name first."

Ewan stepped forward.

"Ewan," he said. "Nine-thirty. And one-twenty, which I stole, and which I'm giving back."

He took a breath.
