Chapter 11: The Porch Swing
Naomi's POV
Lucius's camp sat on stilts at the end of a shell road, where the Dog River bent into a cypress bayou.
A screened porch ran the length of it, with a swing at one end and a lantern hanging from a nail.
The frogs were so loud that I heard them before I turned off the car.
Isaiah sat on the swing in his shirtsleeves with a plate of fried fish on his knee.
Two glasses of sweet tea stood on the boards.
He stood when he saw me.
"I did not know if you would come," he said.
"I told you I would," I said.
"Calvin said you looked like you were going to a funeral."
"Calvin talks too much," I said.
"Calvin," Isaiah said, "has never in his life talked too much."
I set my purse down.
I walked up the steps and across the porch, and I took the plate out of his hand and put it on the floor.
I put my arms around his neck.
He smelled of cedar soap and woodsmoke.
I kissed him, slowly, and his hands came up to my back and held me.
I felt something in my chest that I had not planned on.
"Sit," I said.
He sat back on the swing, and I stepped over his knees and settled into his lap, facing him.
My skirt bunched at my hips.
The chains creaked above us.
"Naomi," he said, against my throat.
"Don't talk," I said.
"I have a great deal to say."
"Then say it after," I said.
I pulled off his shirt and put my mouth on the place where I had left the mark.
It had darkened to a deep plum.
He shivered.
