Chapter 14: The Fish Dock
Lucius's POV
By ten on Thursday morning, nine customers I had sold to for twenty years had driven past my sign.
I watched each one from the dock.
Two were ushers and one was a choir mother.
One was a man who had bought five pounds of medium shrimp every Thursday since 2009.
He looked at me through his windshield and kept going.
"Don't take it personal, boss," my younger deckhand said.
He was twenty-three, and he ate while he worked.
"I'm not taking it personal," I said. "I'm taking it by the pound."
He laughed, and I laughed with him, because I laugh.
I laughed through two divorces and Hurricane Katrina and my mother's funeral.
Everybody at Greater Bethel says Lucius, the good time, and they say it fondly.
Last night in the church lot three men I have known forty years would not shake my hand.
An old church mother called me a fool and a disgrace in front of the pastor's wife.
