Four Deacons Drove Out My Father, So I Brought Them to Their Knees novel · Chapter 21 of 24
Chapter 21: Lent Friday
The Lent fish fry ran forty feet down the church grounds, and the line for it went out to the sidewalk on Dauphin Street.
I had stood in that line at eight years old with my mother's hand over mine on the dollar.
Now I stood in it at twenty-eight with a paper plate and a lemonade.
It was the nineteenth of March.
The church had been thawing since Mardi Gras, a plate at a time.
Lucius worked the fryers in his white apron, laughing at everybody, and the line leaned toward him.
Calvin poured the lemonade with his sleeves folded back.
Isaiah stood at the bread table in his shirtsleeves, buttering rolls.
He said "God bless you" to people who had not spoken to him in five months.
Each person who took a roll from him thanked him quietly, and he nodded.
Abner sat at the cash box with his silver whistle missing from his neck and a roll of tickets in his hand.
