Chapter 11: Whatever Happens
I took the back stairs two at a time and did not wait for him.
He caught up with me on the landing between the third and fourth floors, where the stairwell had no windows and no cameras.
"Margo."
"Who do you work for?"
He stopped one step below me, so that our eyes were level.
"You," he said. "I work for you. You signed my contract."
"Blair says otherwise."
"Blair has been angry for six days and she'll say whatever makes you stop."
"She said it in front of you," I said. "You didn't deny it."
"No," Hoyt said. "I didn't."
The stairwell light hummed.
I waited, and he took a long time.
"Your mother hired me in March," he said at last. "From her bed. She called the shop. She wanted a tablet that Harlan's people couldn't see the inside of, with its own data plan, and a way to watch things without anyone knowing."
"What things?"
"The house. A camera in the kitchen. The front door. She wanted to know who came and went."
I stood very still.
"I went to see her every Tuesday and Thursday. I was her technician and then I was her friend. She asked me to suggest myself for your wedding."
"My mother suggested you to me."
"Yes."
"She sent me to hire the one man she had already bought."
"She didn't buy me," Hoyt said, sharply. "She paid my rate. I would have said no if I'd thought she was using you."
"Why didn't you tell me she'd sent you?"
"She asked me not to, and she was my client before you were."
