Chapter 12: What She Watched
I sat down on the arm of the couch because my legs would not hold me.
The nurse set her tea on the counter, murmured that she would be in the hall, and slipped out.
My mother crossed the room, took the armchair across from me, and lowered herself into it without any help.
"Start at the beginning," I said.
"In the first days of March, the pills changed," Ellen said.
She folded her hands in her lap.
"I had pneumonia, and I got better. The doctor said it was a relapse. He said my heart was failing. He said it kindly, and Harlan held my hand, and I believed them for about two weeks."
"Then what?"
"Then I noticed that on the days Harlan visited, I slept through my own lunch. On the days he didn't, I could read."
She said it plainly, and I found that I was gripping my knees.
"I called Hoyt that same week, still in March. I told him I needed a tablet nobody else could see inside. I asked him to put a camera in my own kitchen."
"You were spying on your own house."
"I was spying on my husband," my mother said, "which is a different thing."
I stared at her.
She went on in the same even voice.
"I watched Harlan carry a proxy form into my hospital room and guide my hand across it, when I was too drugged to read. I watched Blair try on my pearls. I watched your engagement dinner from the kitchen camera, and I watched the three of them laugh at you in the hall afterward."
"Mom."
"I stopped swallowing the pills two weeks ago. I held them under my tongue and spat them into a tissue. The doctor noticed nothing. I got stronger every day, and I told no one but Hoyt."
