Chapter 4: The Whole Thing
On Monday morning I walked into the Alder Grand through the staff door, because I still worked there.
The general manager was waiting for me by the time clock.
"Take any day you need," she said. "Take a month."
"I need a laptop and the AV room for ten minutes."
She looked at me for a moment, and then she handed me her own keycard.
I slid the memory card into the machine and watched the file open.
The dressing room appeared on the screen, with the veil on the vanity and the light slanting through the window.
I did not scrub back to noon.
I started the file at 2:38 and watched myself walk in two minutes later.
Every word was there, from Blair's gasp to my own whisper to Blair saying, "Don't be dramatic. He was never going to stay yours."
The clock in the corner of the picture ran through all of it.
Inside those fourteen minutes I cut nothing and added nothing.
I trimmed everything before 2:38, because I had not been in the room yet.
At 9:52 I posted the clip, fourteen minutes long, under my own name.
The caption said: Everything from 2:38 to 2:52. No edits.
By ten the first comment read: Wait, this is nothing like the clip going around.
By ten-fifteen there were four thousand more.
Blair's clip had started at my whisper and left out everything before it.
People had noticed.
At eleven the planner called me, crying, to say she had been telling everyone for two days that she had seen Blair go up the back stairs with Porter at 2:20.
At noon Harlan's office sent me a message asking me to take the video down.
I did not answer.
At one o'clock the general manager appeared in the AV doorway.
