Chapter 12: Eyes Open
I lay down on my own bed at ten with the lamp on and my eyes shut.
I did not know how to do it any other way.
Four people came in.
The third stair groaned, and then the fifth, and the door opened all the way.
Nobody whispered.
"Lamp stays on," Abel said.
"Yes," I said.
It was the first time I had given any of them an answer, with all of them in the room.
Nobody stopped.
Hands took the hem of my T-shirt and drew it up over my head.
Hands slid my shorts down my legs.
I lay bare in the yellow light, with my eyes squeezed shut, and I felt every one of them look.
"Beth," Clint said, hoarse. "Look at me."
"I can't."
"Why?"
"Because then it's real."
Somebody laughed, very softly, and it was not unkind.
"Okay," Eli said. "Then stay there. We'll go slow."
Lyle's mouth settled on my breast.
Eli's hand slid up my thigh and over my hip.
Abel knelt at the end of the bed and took my ankle, and he kissed the arch of my foot, and he worked up the inside of my leg with his mouth and his beard, until my hips lifted and I was shaking.
Clint lay down beside me and turned my face to his.
He kissed me.
It was the slowest kiss of my life, and I opened my mouth under his, and I tasted ten years.
Abel put his mouth on me.
I gasped into Clint's kiss, and Clint swallowed it, and Lyle's teeth closed on my nipple and let go.
Eli slid two fingers into me, and curled them, and I came apart.
