Chapter 7: Ask Me on the Fifteenth

I went out my window onto the porch roof and down the trellis.

I hadn't done it since I was sixteen, and my knee remembered every year.

Rafe's truck smelled like coffee and rope.

He drove without talking, and I held my hands under my thighs so they'd stop moving.

At the boathouse he took me into the office and turned the laptop toward me.

"The gate camera runs on a motion sensor," he said. "It has sound. I saw this when I checked the log tonight."

He pressed play.

The picture was gray and grainy, with a time stamp in the corner that read 6:04 a.m.

A car pulled up to the gate.

Dawn got out of the passenger side, in jeans and a sweatshirt, her braid tied up.

Brett got out of the driver's side.

He put his arm around her waist and kissed her, a long one, up against the gatepost.

I watched it with my face perfectly still.

"Go on," Rafe said quietly. "It gets worse."

On the screen, Dawn pulled back and laughed.

"You'd think she'd notice," she said. "You're out every Thursday night."

"Jo doesn't ask questions," Brett said. "She's the easiest person I've ever met."

"Frank says the same thing."

"Frank's right."

Brett turned and looked at the hall through the iron gate.

"We seat her at table one," he said. "Right under her father's nose. She'll cry through the vows and clap at the end, and by the time she figures it out, you'll be Mrs. Hollander with a hundred and forty witnesses."

"And if she makes a scene?"

"Frank already handled the minister," Dawn said. "Carol says she'll take care of Jo's phone."
