Chapter 4: The Folder

Stevie's POV

The forty thousand dollars arrived at 8:02 on Thursday morning.

I stood in the lobby of the Regent Tower and watched my student loan balance drop by two thirds.

Then I read the text on my flip phone for the sixth time.

Do not go back to that tower.

I went back to the tower.

A man I had never met had mailed me a hundred dollars every year for thirteen years and had hacked a security firm the night I was in the building.

If he wouldn't explain that, I would find out another way.

Dane met me at the elevator with a coffee in each hand.

"Cream, four sugars," he said, and gave me the second one.

"That's exactly how I take it."

"Your friend Roxy cornered me on the sidewalk last night and gave me the order."

"She did what?"

"She says you're a mess and I should feed you." He looked at my face. "Hard night?"

"The hard part was the text."

His smile went away.

"What text?"

"Nothing. A wrong number."

He didn't believe me, and he didn't push, which I appreciated.

The forty-first floor was one long room full of desks and very large people.

There were two dozen of them, men and women, and all of them were big in the shoulders.

Nobody was typing.

They were all looking at me.

"Is it always this quiet?" I asked.

"They're being polite," Dane said. "They don't get a lot of guests."

A woman at the nearest desk lifted her chin and took a slow breath through her nose.
