Chapter 5: The Door

His office was on the forty-second floor, and he was standing at the window when I walked in without knocking.

Dane stayed outside, and I kept the door wedged open with my foot.

"Two hundred and fourteen times," I said.

Tiernan turned around.

He didn't ask what I meant, which told me enough.

"You've known my name since I was eleven years old."

"I've known the name Ashworth for eleven years," he said. "I didn't know it was yours until last night."

"That's a very convenient sentence."

"It's a true one."

"Then explain why a total stranger opened my file two hundred and fourteen times."

"Because I was looking for you."

I laughed, and it came out wrong.

"I was a child. In a foster home, in Queens. You were what, eighteen?"

"I was eighteen." His voice was low. "I found the file in my father's safe the week he died. It said a family had been killed, and that one baby might have lived."

"So you hunted the baby."

"I looked for her for eleven years. I never found her. Every trail ended in a dead house or a sealed record."

"And last night she walked into your suite with a flip phone and a can of mace."

"Yes."

"How lucky."

"I don't call it luck."

He crossed the room toward me, and I took a step back and my heel caught the door.

The door swung. Tiernan put a hand on it before it could close and stopped it.
