Chapter 9: Seven Days

Tiernan's POV

I had promised to tell her after dinner.

After dinner, she was asleep on a couch in the east sitting room with her shoes off and a blanket Dane had found, and I stood over her and said nothing.

It was a coward's choice, and I made it knowing that.

My aunt had given us seven days.

If I told Stevie tonight what her family had been, and who had stood at the table with them, she would walk out of this house before morning.

Under pack law, an unmarked female who left the territory was refused, and a refused female was nobody's concern.

Sonja would see to it that she stayed nobody's concern.

If I marked her first, she would be my Luna, and no one could touch her.

Then I would tell her.

That was the plan.

I closed the door of the sitting room without a sound.

Dane was waiting in the hall with his arms crossed.

"You didn't tell her," he said.

"She was asleep."

"She was asleep because you carried her up the stairs and she didn't wake. I watched you do it." He kept his voice low. "Tiernan, you said tonight."

"The council gave us a week."

"Then use the week to tell her, not to hide from her."

"If she hears it now, she runs."

"If she hears it later, she runs faster."

I said nothing.

He studied me, and the anger in him faded into something worse, which was concern.
