Chapter 22: Mine
Dorian's POV
She locked the door of the tower room behind us, and then she put her back against it and looked at me.
"You were holding your breath in the hall," she said.
"I was."
"For how long?"
"Since you walked across the floor." I couldn't make my voice sound like mine. "I thought you'd say his name."
"Garrick's?"
"I thought you'd look at him, and see a man on his knees, and decide you owed him something. A mate's duty. Pity. The old bond, being the first."
She came away from the door.
"That is what you've been afraid of," she said. "All this time."
"Yes."
"Since the hearing."
"Since the night I learned your name."
She stopped in front of me, with her face tipped up, and the candle on the sill picking out her grey eyes.
"I never chose him," she said. "The Goddess put him on my arm and I tried to make it into something. I've never once wanted him the way I want you. I didn't know it was possible."
She put both hands flat on my chest, over the wolf.
"This is the first thing I've ever picked."
I couldn't speak.
She pushed.
I went back a step, then another, until my knees met the edge of the bed, and she pushed again and I sat.
"Let me," she said.
I let her.
She stood between my knees and undid the buttons of my shirt one at a time, slowly, and I watched her fingers shake.
She drew it off my shoulders.
She bent and kissed the ink over my heart, and then my collarbone, and the hollow of my throat.
