Chapter 5: The Warriors at the Gate
The Beta came to the Rookery gate that afternoon with eight warriors behind him.
They stopped at the wall and waited to be asked in, because that was the treaty.
Dad opened the gate himself.
"Good afternoon," he said. "You'll want to leave your weapons at the post."
The Beta unbuckled his belt and handed over his knife.
The eight warriors behind him didn't move.
"All of them," Dad said pleasantly.
They did it slowly, and a heap of knives built up on the stone post.
I watched from the porch with Mum's hand on my shoulder.
The Beta was a broad man in his forties who had taught me to throw a punch when I was nineteen.
He was the only wolf in Redmoor who had ever called me Morwenna instead of the Rooke girl.
He didn't look at me.
"I have the Alpha's word," he said. "She's to come home before the Moot sits. Safe, and under guard, and nobody lays a hand on her."
"That's very kind of the Alpha," Dad said.
"It's the order."
"I'm sure it is. It's the second order I'm curious about."
The Beta's jaw went tight.
"There's only the one."
"You've been told to put her in the Redmoor cells overnight," Dad said. "You've been told a woman who runs four months pregnant through the pines is likely to miscarry, and that nobody will ask questions if she does. Garrick said it quietly, in the study, with Verity at the window. He said it twice."
Nobody on the road made a sound.
"You haven't decided what you'll do about it," Dad went on. "You think the Alpha is mistaken. You also think he is the Alpha. It's been keeping you up since the feast."
