Chapter 7: The Moot

"My father," I said. "Since the day I was born."

Dorian Wray looked at me for one more second.

Then he nodded once and walked to the high seat at the end of the hall.

He didn't sit.

He stood beside it with one hand on the carved arm, and the hall went quiet around him.

"Stonewater is neutral ground," he said. "The Redmoor Pack has brought a charge. The Rooke household will answer it. Elder, speak."

The Elder Mother rose.

She was a small, straight woman in grey, and she spoke as if she had practised.

"This is a matter of pack honour," she said. "Our Alpha's mate is a hybrid. She is carrying his heir. Two nights ago, at her own marking feast, she poisoned a cup with silver and accused our healer of the crime. Then she fled to the vampires, who took her in."

A rustle ran down the Redmoor side.

"She is unstable," the Elder Mother said. "She is half something we do not understand. We ask the Moot to find her unfit, and to place the child in the healer's keeping until it is born."

Verity stood beside her aunt with her head bowed.

A tear ran down her cheek and fell.

"I loved her," Verity said, in a small voice. "I only wanted to help."

I almost admired it.

Dorian's eyes came to me.

"Morwenna Rooke," he said. "Answer."

I stood up.

Mum took my hand and let go.

I walked out to the middle of the open floor, and I took the glass out of my coat pocket.

It had a mouthful of tonic still in it, gone a little cloudy, and the inside of the glass was etched grey.

I set it on the stone in front of the high seat.

"This is the glass Verity put in my hand," I said. "That's the silver she's been giving me since I was pregnant. My mother drew it out of my blood two nights ago. There's a bowl of salt water at my father's house that turned grey from it."
