Chapter 20: The Oath

Tancredi's POV

She would not let me into bed twelve.

"He knows your face," Adriana said in the corridor. "He'll say nothing with you in the room."

"Then I'll stand at the door."

"Leave it open."

I knew the man on the bed.

Last time he had been the one with the key to the records room, and he had turned it every night for four days.

This time he lay with his wrist wrapped in white, staring at the ceiling.

She sat down on the edge of the chair beside him, in her white coat, and said nothing.

"Donna," he said at last. "You cut me."

"I did. It will heal if you do what I say."

"I was told you'd be easy."

"You were told wrong."

He swallowed.

"Mr. Ignazio ordered the guard shot in the Don's room," he said. "I pulled the trigger. He said the bag was already hung and the surgeon would take the blame. I've got a mother in Newark."

"Who was in the room?"

"Him. His daughter. She had a lemon smell. She said she wanted it done before the surgeons could see the bag."

"Will you say that at the table?"

"If my mother's out of the city by tonight."

"She will be," I said from the door.

Adriana did not turn around. Her shoulders loosened, only a little.

"Done," she said.

That evening the Don sent for me.

He sat in the villa's study in his old chair, with a blanket over his knees and the seal back on his hand.

"You want to know what I did while my brother planned this," he said.
