Chapter 8: Three Boxes

By Wednesday the family had taken over the waiting room on the fourth floor.

Consuelo sat in the best chair with a rosary in her lap.

Lorena's mother sat beside her, and Lorena's father stood by the window with a paper cup of coffee he never drank.

Lorena took the seat nearest the door.

The neurologist came out at eleven with his tablet under his arm.

"She is surfacing," he said. "Her eyes moved under the lids this morning. Her breathing is her own. I would say she is a day or two from waking, perhaps three."

Her mother pressed both hands to her chest.

"Thank God," she said. "Thank God, thank God."

Consuelo kissed her rosary.

Lorena looked across the room at Ignacio.

He stood against the far wall with his arms crossed and his eyes on the floor.

He had not smiled.

He was the only person in the room who had not.

A nurse brought coffee on a tray.

Lorena took a ginger candy from her bag and unwrapped it under cover of her hand.

Ignacio was suddenly beside her.

"What is that?" he asked quietly.

"A ginger candy. My stomach's been unsettled."

"Since when?"

"A week or two. It's nothing."

"Where did you get them?"

"A friend of Pilar's gave them to me. He wants to manufacture my chair."

"Which friend?"

"Octavio Rangel."

She had expected him to say who?
