Chapter 20: The Roof

It didn't come easily.

Rosario had to twist it.

Tiziano's hand jerked once, and his father held on, and the whole table heard the ring scrape over the knuckle.

Then it was off.

Rosario closed his fist around it and put it in his cardigan pocket with his glasses.

"Pop," Tiziano said.

Rosario turned his back on him and walked to his own chair.

He didn't sit.

He just stood there behind it with his hands on the carved top.

Tiziano looked around the table.

At the aunts. At the cousins, who wouldn't look back. At Cristina, standing, with her chin up and her eyes wet.

At me.

"You did this," he said.

"You read my message out loud at Christmas dinner," I said. "You did this."

He shoved his chair back so hard it fell over.

He walked out of the dining room. We heard the front door, and then a car on the gravel, too fast.

Nobody spoke.

The old uncle with the cane picked up his fork and ate a clam.

Forty minutes later, Killian's phone buzzed on the table.

He looked at it. His face went flat.

He turned the screen to me.

It was the camera over the loft door on Fulton Street.

The door's glass was smashed. A man in a black velvet jacket was coming back down the iron stairs.

He was holding something small and brown by one ear.
