Chapter 21: His Terms

Killian looked at the ring on his father's palm for a long time.

He didn't touch it.

"Not up here," he said.

Rosario's hand stayed out.

"You threw me out at your table," Killian said. "In front of all of them. If you want me back, you ask me there."

The wind blew Rosario's hair across his glasses.

Then, slowly, he closed his hand around the ring.

"Then come home," he said.

It was after midnight when we came back in through the front door at River Forest.

Nobody had gone home.

The aunts were still at the table in their black dresses.

The old uncle with the cane had fallen asleep upright in his chair and woke up when the door shut.

The Scalises were still there too, at their end.

Cristina hadn't sat back down. She was standing by the window with her arms crossed.

Seven fishes sat cold on their platters.

Rosario walked to the head of the table and stayed standing.

So did everybody else, one by one, until the whole room was on its feet.

"Killian," Rosario said. "Come here."

Killian walked up the length of the table.

He stopped in front of his father.

Rosario took his glasses off his head and folded them and put them in his pocket.

"I took your keys at this table," he said. "I let my family watch me do it."
