Chapter 18: Claiming Night

"What does it cost you?" I said.

Orson stood very still in the doorway of the conference room, with Derrick gone and the vellum rolled in its case on the table.

"A fight in the Ring," he said. "Broderick against me, before both packs. It ends when one of us yields, or when one of us can't."

"You'd die for a seat."

"I'd fight for you." He crossed the room and stopped an arm's length away. "The seat is just where the fight happens."

"And you didn't tell me."

"I was going to tonight."

"When?"

"After I'd looked at you a while longer first."

I laughed, and it came out wet.

I took his hand and led him out of the room, past the guard on the corridor and into the private elevator that went up to his floor.

His apartment smelled like him.

It was dark except for the city in the windows, forty floors of glass and the lake black beyond it.

I did not turn on a lamp.

"Keira," he said behind me. "You don't have to do this because of a charter."

"I'm not."

"Because of Blair's text, or the Ring."

"I'm doing it because you stood in that doorway and told me what it costs you." I turned around. "And I want your mouth. And I've wanted it since a car on Lake Shore Drive."

His breath went out of him.

I put both hands on his shirt and began undoing the buttons, one at a time, from the top.

He let me.

When I reached his belt he caught my wrists.

"The bond sets itself once we're together," he said roughly. "You don't have to bite. You don't have to mark me. Anything you want is yours, but that part is yours to decide."

"I've decided."

"You haven't thought."

"I've thought for three days." I freed my hands. "Take your shirt off."

He took it off.

He pulled my sweater over my head and my bra after it, and he stood looking at me in the light from the windows.

"You're shaking," I said.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because it's you." His thumb traced the line of my collarbone. "Because I've waited, and now I'm here."
