Chapter 19: Her Name

Mom walked to the stand in her good cardigan, with her handbag still on her arm.

She didn't ask Mara for the microphone.

She stood beside it, and Mara, after a moment, stepped back.

"I'm not going to say it into that," Mom said. "I want them to hear me without it."

Her voice was small, but the hall was so quiet that it reached the back wall.

"My name is on the settlement letter," she said. "I signed it the same month Mara came to us."

Nobody moved.

"I told myself I was giving a child a home. I was.

"I was also buying quiet. I took her in so that my husband's worst night would have a happy face at our breakfast table."

She turned to the front row.

"Willa."

I felt every head turn.

"Yes, Mom."

"You were fourteen, and I told you to be gentle with her. I said she needed fun. I never told you why."

Her mouth shook.

"I asked a child to guard my secret and I called it kindness. You were never slow. You were never a joke.

"You were the only one in my house who wasn't allowed to know, and I did that on purpose."

I had wanted her to say it for fourteen years.

It did not feel like winning.

It felt like standing in a cold room that someone had finally put a lamp in.
