Chapter 9: Until Sunday

By nine that night it had started to rain.

It was the first rain of the season, light and warm.

The whole hillside smelled of wet dust and fruit.

Cillian and I sat on the porch of the main house with a blanket between us and an open bottle on the boards.

"Second-pressing red," he said. "You wanted to hit someone."

"I did."

"This is the safer version."

I drank.

It was dark and a little rough and exactly right.

The envelope was in the inside pocket of my jacket.

I could feel it against my ribs every time I breathed.

"I'm going to stay until Sunday," I said. "Then I'll find somewhere else."

"Sunday is tomorrow."

"I know. I'm being responsible."

"Nobody asked you to be."

"I have to say something first." I turned the glass in my hands. "I just left a man. I'm not going to be anything to anyone for a long time. I need that to be clear."

"It's clear."

"No touching."

"Okay."

"I mean it."

"I know you do," Cillian said. "I can sit on one side of a blanket."

I nodded.

He leaned back against the post and watched the rain.

The silence went on for a while, and it wasn't uncomfortable.

"Do you want to know what I thought, the summer you left?" he asked.

"What?"

"That you were the only person I'd ever met who listened to what the vines said."
