Chapter 20: The Elder's Chair
The stone hall was fuller than it had been for the moot.
My parents sat on my right and Cormac on my left, and Jodie stood alone at the end of the front row with her notebook closed in her hands.
The Elder took the middle chair on the stage and sat very straight.
She rapped her stick once, and the noise died.
"Pack of Cedarfall," she said. "I called this council because your Alpha is unfit."
Torsten sat in the hearing seat with his hands on his knees.
He had washed the blood from his shirt and put on a clean one. He looked straight at the pack.
"In nine days he has stood by while a wolf was beaten in the ring," the Elder said. "He has taken a subordinate from his own detail to his bed. He has been censured for four years of failure, and he has not once asked this council what the pack wants."
She paused.
"A leader who puts a woman before the charter cannot be trusted with the pack. I ask for a vote of no confidence."
A murmur ran round the tables.
Some of it was doubt, and I heard some of it turn thoughtful.
I understood what she was doing. She did not need to be right. She needed three hundred wolves to remember that Torsten had loved me before he had told anyone.
Torsten rose.
"The Alpha will answer," he said. "I did take her to my bed, with her asking. I did stand at the rope while she fought, because she had the right and I had none to stop her. I do not apologize for either."
He turned to face the pack.
"But the Elder is right that the pack should vote. If you want a different Alpha, say so. I will hand the chair to whoever you name."
