Chapter 18: The Grange, Again
The Grange Hall still had its paper pumpkins on Thursday night.
Dale had climbed a ladder and taken down THANK YOU, BRIGHTWATER by himself, and now a plain sheet hung in its place.
It said ASHFORD MILLS GROWERS. COUNT.
Forty-one folding chairs filled the floor, and every grower had brought a drawer.
They held index cards, receipt books and a few torn envelopes.
Some had written the dates on their wrists.
Joanna sat at the head table with a calculator and a ledger.
Beside her sat the board chair in her navy coat, and the man in the gray suit, who turned out to be Brightwater's attorney.
A cashbox as big as a bread box sat open on the cloth.
My father and Dale sat in the front row.
My father's notebook was in his shirt pocket, thick with numbers.
I stood at the microphone.
"Nobody here is in trouble," I said.
"We're going to count what was taken, one grower at a time."
"The company pays it back tonight, with interest."
A murmur went around the room.
