Chapter 19: The Deputy

The deputy pushed through the growers with his cuffs already out.

"That's enough, folks," he said. "I've got him."

"He swung at the CEO!" someone shouted.

"I saw it."

The old grower let go of Jarrett's wrist one finger at a time.

The deputy turned Jarrett by the shoulder and clicked one cuff on.

Jarrett went rigid.

"On what charge?" he said. "On whose word?"

"Theft, to start with." The deputy glanced at the chair. "And I believe there's a phone you want me to read from."

"There is," she said.

The attorney handed him a company phone in a clear evidence bag.

It was the one Jarrett had surrendered in the diner, and its screen was cracked across one corner.

"We got into it Wednesday," the attorney said. "Regional vice presidents sign away their privacy when they sign for the device."

"You can't," Jarrett said.

"I can read it into the record in front of the people it concerns." The deputy unfolded a printed page. "Mr. Kerr, with your permission."
