The developer was waiting at the oak at nine the next morning, Friday, with his two men and a folding table.
My father stood beside me in his good flannel.
Dale stood on his other side, and the stubble on the east field was pale in the sun.
Behind us, in a long loose line along the fence, came the growers.
Nobody had asked them to.
The developer looked at the line and said nothing about it.
"Mr. Kerr," he said. "I expected your signature."
"I brought something better," I said.
"I doubt it."
I laid my own folder on the table.
"Your option says Jarrett Pelletier owed you one and a half million with interest by today. He can't pay it."
"I'm aware."
"So the deed you hold in escrow goes to you at five o'clock."
"Which is why I'm standing in a cornfield." He glanced up at the oak. "What's your offer?"
"One and a half million."
He laughed out loud.
"I'm sorry. I thought you were serious."
