Chapter 23: Columbus
The Brightwater boardroom took up the whole thirty-second floor.
One wall was glass, and the Columbus river ran gray under it.
Eleven directors sat at a table long enough to land a plane on.
I stood at the head in a suit my assistant had pressed that morning.
Nobody had said a word since I put the plan on the screen.
The chair sat at my right in her navy jacket with her hands folded.
"Mr. Kerr," said a thin man in a very good tie. "This is a plant, not a charity."
He was the director who had voted against me three weeks ago.
"It's a plant," I said.
"You want us to build a cannery, a fresh-pack hall and a freezer line in a farm town."
"Yes."
"We already have a facility here, with a thousand employees."
"And it stays open." I clicked to the next slide. "Every one of those jobs stays."
