Chapter 15: Saturday Kids
Nobody moved.
The skillet lay on the tiles, spinning slowly, with a pancake stuck to it upside down.
Finn looked at the pancake.
Robbie looked at me.
He wasn't teasing.
He had his hands flat on the table on either side of the juice, waiting, the way he waited for a serve.
I pulled out the chair across from him and sat down in his father's sweatshirt.
"No," I said. "You have a mom. She lives in California, and she's yours."
"I know that." He frowned. "I meant an extra one."
"I don't think I'm that either. Not yet. I'm Audrey."
"Okay." He thought about it. "Are you going to be Audrey here a lot?"
I looked at Finn.
Finn picked up the skillet, very slowly, and put it in the sink.
"If that's okay with you," I said.
Robbie took a long drink of orange juice.
"It's okay. But you have to sit on the left at my tournament."
"I already promised."
"And you have to come to clinic on Saturday. Everybody comes to clinic."
"I don't play squash, Robbie."
He looked at me with real pity.
