Chapter 24: Court Three, Again
In the morning he didn't remember saying it.
Or he pretended not to, and I let him.
I didn't bring it up in November, or at Christmas.
I didn't bring it up at the pancake summit in March, when Robbie beat both of us in the same morning.
I kept it in my pocket.
On June 13, a year to the day, Finn said Robbie had an exhibition match in New York.
"On court three," he said, over his coffee, much too casually. "Our kids against the Manhattan kids. You have to come. He'll sulk if you don't."
"Robbie doesn't sulk."
"He's started. He's ten. It's a whole new thing."
So I took the morning train with them, in a yellow sundress I'd bought in April for no one in particular.
My parents were on the same train, by coincidence.
My mother was a terrible liar, and she kept looking at my left hand and then out the window.
"Is something going on?" I asked.
"Your father has news," she said quickly.
My father lowered his newspaper.
