Chapter 23: An Invitation to Supper

Becca's POV

Della asked my husband what he wanted for supper, and he needed three tries.

We were in her kitchen on Sunday evening, with the oven warm.

Her silver watch lay face down on the counter.

"Whatever's easiest," Tate said.

"That isn't what I asked," Della said.

"Whatever Becca likes."

"That isn't it either."

Tate rubbed the back of his neck and looked at the ceiling.

Nobody had ever asked him this.

I watched him search his own head for the answer.

"Pot roast," he said at last. "With the carrots cut big."

Della wrote it on the back of an envelope, and her hand shook slightly.

"I'll make it Wednesday," she said. "Tonight I have chicken, and I'm sorry."

"Chicken is wonderful," Tate said, and then added, "Wednesday, though. I'd like that."

I put my hand over my mouth so I wouldn't ruin it.

Behind us, the door banged open.

Joelle stood in the doorway with a sunburned nose.
