Chapter 22: The Wing

Samantha's POV

I put my hand on the steel letters of her name.

They were cool and smooth, and my fingers fit inside the P.

"Her name is Poppy," I said.

"Yes."

"Tell me about her."

He was quiet for a moment, and his voice came out slow.

"She had dark hair, a lot of it. They put a little hat on her anyway. I held her for an hour." He swallowed. "Her mother couldn't be in the room. I stayed, and I told her everything I'd planned to say for the next twenty years."

I turned from the wall and put my arms around him, and he held on hard.

"Here is my answer," I said into his coat. "I'm not going back to Tobias. I haven't wanted to since I saw that bag in his hand."

His arms tightened.

"I'm having this baby. It will have a father who comes to its birthdays, and that will be him, and I'll deal with it. But I'm not asking you to hold the door, Finnegan. I'm asking you to stand in the room."

"Samantha."

"I love you too. I wanted to say that where she could hear it."

He kissed me.

It was not like the shed or the cockpit.

It was slow, and sure, and we both knew where it was going.

"My apartment is ten minutes away," he said against my mouth.

"Then drive like an idiot."

He drove at the speed limit, and I held his hand across the gearshift the whole way.

The apartment was on the fourth floor, with a bedroom window over the river and one lamp on in the corner.

I had hardly shut the door when he turned me against it and kissed me again, and I had my hands in his hair.

He got my zipper down in one pull.
