Chapter 13: Say It

Su Ye took one of the paper cups out of his hand and did not drink from it.

"Not here," he said.

They went up the service stairs to the roof garden.

It was empty at that hour, wet from an evening shower, with the city lit up below the railing.

Su Ye sat on the low wall.

Lu Chen stayed standing.

"Say it," Su Ye said. "I want to hear it in your mouth."

Lu Chen opened his mouth and waited for the burn.

For nine days it had come every time, white and sudden, locking his throat.

His wrist stayed cool.

"He showed you," Lu Chen said slowly. "So I can say it."

His voice shook on the last word.

He hadn't known how much he had been carrying until it stopped weighing on him.

"I died in a cell. I killed your family first. I put the pen in your hand, and you signed."

"I know. I watched."

"You didn't read it."

Su Ye frowned.

"You looked at me and you smiled and you signed. You didn't read one line." Lu Chen's voice cracked. "That's what I can't put down. You trusted me, and I knew it, and I took it."

"That's the thing you can't forgive? That I trusted you?"

"Yes."

"That's insane, Chen."

"I know."

Su Ye stared at the floor tiles for a while.

When he looked up, his blue eyes were red at the rims and very steady.

"Now it's my turn," he said. "You slept with me."

Lu Chen flinched.

"You had the whole thing in your head, and you took my shirt off anyway. You let me say things into your neck. I told you my fishing town, and the ferry captain, and the winter he died. You listened to all of it, and you knew."
