Chapter 10: Her Wrists
The boots stopped directly over our heads, on the dock, and stayed there.
His palm lay warm across my mouth.
His heart was going hard against my back, and mine was going harder.
Neither of us moved.
I heard a lighter click once, and a man cough, and the planks creak as he shifted his weight.
Then the boots went on down the dock, one slow step at a time, until the sound was lost in the wind.
He took his hand away.
"Someone walking home," he said in my ear. "That's all."
"You went stiff," I said.
"I always do."
"Why?"
"I'll tell you some other night," he said.
I wanted to push, and I knew what pushing would cost, so I didn't.
I turned in the cage of his arms and found his face with both hands.
I kissed him until we were breathing the same breath.
"I have something," I said.
I reached into my coat on the floor and found the coil of braided twine in the pocket.
I put it in his palm.
His fingers closed on it, and I heard him take a breath.
"You want me to use this on you," he said.
"I used it on you," I said.
"Yes."
"So now you."
He was quiet for as long as it took to turn that over.
"Take your clothes off," he said. "Get on the bed."
I shed everything at once.
I felt my way to the bed and lay down on my back in the cold sheets.
I heard him cross the cabin, and I heard his own clothes drop.
The mattress dipped as he knelt beside me.
He took my right wrist, and then my left, and drew them above my head.
The twine went around, and I felt him wrap it, and pull it snug, and tie it to the iron rail.
He tied a different knot than mine, a firm quick hitch that held without cutting.
The other wrist went the same way.
I pulled once against it, testing.
