Chapter 16: Fever Again
Mingzhou crossed the lobby without a word.
He stopped in front of Yuheng, and Ou Jin, with extraordinary tact, discovered a fire exit that needed his attention.
"You told them he said stop," Mingzhou said.
"It was true."
"You didn't have to say it."
"I did." Yuheng's voice was low. "I wasn't going to let that board decide it was a misunderstanding."
Mingzhou looked at the pen-ink on his cuff.
He looked at the line of the jaw and the scar through the eyebrow.
He looked at the mouth that had told a room full of directors what it had never told him.
"You're an idiot," he said.
"I've been told," Yuheng said.
"You gave up the chair."
"It's a chair," Yuheng said.
"It was your whole life."
"No." Yuheng looked at him. "I had that wrong. I'm only just learning what it was."
Mingzhou's throat closed.
He put out his hand and took hold of Yuheng's sleeve, between the cuff and the elbow, and held it.
He did not say anything else.
Neither did Yuheng.
After a while Mingzhou said, "Sundays, there's a dumpling stall on Willow Lane."
"I know," Yuheng said.
"You can come on Sundays."
"Only Sundays?" Yuheng asked.
"Only Sundays," Mingzhou said.
Yuheng nodded gravely.
It was the best offer he'd had all year, and his face said so.
He came on Sunday, and sat on the bench, and ate in silence.
He came the Sunday after.
On the thirteenth night, Mingzhou lay in the narrow bed above the piano shop and felt his skin go hot.
