Chapter 23: Yes
Mingzhou said yes at the stage door, in the rain, with half the hall pouring out around them and flashbulbs going off.
He did not say it prettily.
He said it hoarse and fast, with both hands fisted in Yuheng's coat, and then he said it again against his mouth.
Ou Jin, behind them, held an umbrella over their heads and wept openly into his tie.
"I'm not filing a complaint," Mingzhou said, when they came up for air. "Not now."
"You're allowed to," Yuheng said.
"I know. I'm allowed to change my mind in a year, too."
"Yes."
"Say yes properly," Mingzhou said.
"Yes," Yuheng said, and his eyes were wet. "Any day you want. You can bring it to me and I'll stand where you tell me."
"Good."
"Where are we going?"
"Home," Mingzhou said.
Qin House was dark and silent when the car pulled up at one in the morning.
The staff had been sent to bed. The hall lamp burned low.
Mingzhou walked in ahead of him without turning on the lights, across the marble, and straight through the double doors of the living room.
The black leather sofa stood where it had always stood.
The grand piano was beside it, with the lid up.
Someone had moved the music stand and put a bench at the right distance from the keys.
A vase of white flowers stood on the lid.
He stopped in the middle of the floor.
Behind him, Yuheng hesitated in the doorway.
"I'll have it taken out," he said, low. "The sofa. I'll burn the sofa. I should have done it the first day."
