Chapter 18: What the Shots Did
The surgeon asked to see me the next afternoon.
He did not use his office.
He came to the family room with a paper cup of tea and sat on the low table, so his eyes were level with mine.
Bev sat beside me.
I had asked her to stay, and I had asked her to say nothing.
"I want to tell you plainly what happened," the surgeon said. "You can stop me whenever you want."
"Tell me."
"The repair was good. It is still good. I looked at it myself."
"After a repair like that the muscle can swell, and the swelling can upset the rhythm."
"It happens in a small number of children. It happened to Timmy."
"We gave him everything we have for forty minutes. It was not enough."
I nodded.
I had read all of it already, in my head, at three in the morning.
"Did it happen because of the spell in the elevator?" I asked.
"No."
"Because we waited? Because he didn't have it done sooner?"
"No. We moved it up. We did it faster than I have ever done a case."
