Chapter 13: The Second Half

"Say something," I said.

My voice came out flat and small.

Rhett shut the door behind him, and that frightened me more than anything, so I stood up.

"Don't," I said. "Stay on that side of the room."

He stopped by the dresser.

"It's true," he said. "All of it on that screen is true."

I had known it for a full minute, and hearing it still knocked the air out of me.

"Tell me how," I said. "Start at the bar."

"Camille found me in Portland six weeks ago. A friend of a friend. She said her boss's wife was lonely and the marriage was dead, and he needed proof for a divorce."

"Proof of what?"

"That you'd moved on. I didn't know about any clause until you told me about your shares. I only knew the money. Forty thousand dollars, half up front."

He looked at the floor.

"For what?"

"For getting you to like me, and photographing it." He said it plainly, and I gave him credit for that. "I told myself you'd have done it anyway. He said you were cold. He said you'd been alone so long you wouldn't care who it was."

"And at the bar?"

"I had the camera in my bag when you sat down." His mouth twisted. "Then you laughed at the napkin boat, and I stopped being able to lift the camera."

I found that I was gripping the back of the desk chair.
