Chapter 24: One Room, One Key
The small boat dropped me at the dock on Sandglass Cay at four in the afternoon.
I carried my own bag.
The desk clerk was the same young man, and when he saw my name on the screen his whole face changed.
"Ms. Teller," he said. "Welcome back."
"Thank you."
"Room 14 is ready. Garden side." He slid a brass key across the counter, and then, after a small, careful pause, a second one. "And Room 15 is booked as well, in the same name. He said you might want it for the view."
I looked at the two keys lying side by side.
"Is he here?"
"He's been at the bar since lunch, ma'am. He said he'd wait until you came."
I left the bag with the clerk and walked the beach path.
The sun was low and gold on the water.
I took off my sandals for the last stretch.
The bar was the same thatched roof over eight stools, the same strings of bulbs, the same bartender polishing a glass.
Rhett sat on the good stool with a napkin in front of him, folded into a small crooked boat.
He turned when I came under the roof.
He looked thinner and browner, and the grey at his temples had spread.
"You came," he said.
"I told you six weeks."
"It's been six weeks and two days."
"I was making a point."
"It landed."
I sat on the stool beside him, and it held.
"You sold your camera," I said.
"I sold my camera."
"I put the forty thousand into the care home in Savannah. It's paid through next year." I took the napkin boat and turned it over in my hands. "Your father's name is on the receipt. Mine isn't."
