Chapter 10: Rain on the Gate

The rain started at ten that night, warm and heavy, the kind that comes down in sheets over the squares.

I was at the front window in Dot's old robe when the black car pulled up under the oaks.

Gavin got out without an umbrella.

He walked to the iron gate and did not ring the bell.

He knelt down on the wet bricks.

I stood there for a full minute, watching the rain run down his collar.

Seven years ago he had carried me through a storm like this one, laughing.

I went out onto the porch in bare feet.

"Get up, Gavin."

"I'm not getting up."

His voice cracked on the second word.

"I'll stay here all night. I'll stay till you listen."

"I asked you a question this morning, and you hung up."

"I can't."

"Can't, or won't?"

"Callie, you don't understand what she can do to me." He was shaking, and it wasn't only the cold. "Please. Come home. Everything I did, I did to keep you safe."

"Safe from what?"

His mouth opened.

His phone lit up in his hand.

Corinna.

He looked at the screen, and he flinched.

"Answer it," I said.

"Callie"

"Answer her. You always do."

The door of the carriage house banged open across the yard.

Ward came across the wet grass in a T-shirt and sweatpants, and he walked straight to the gate without hurrying.
