Chapter 19: Five Years

Tristram walked up the middle aisle between the tables with three hundred people watching him.

He did not look at his mother.

He took the three steps to the stage, and Toby gave up the microphone without a word.

For a long moment Tristram just stood there.

Then he reached into his breast pocket and took out the gold pen.

He set it on the lectern.

"I kept a book about my wife for five years," he said. "You've heard what's in it. I want you to hear what it was."

Inez was already moving.

"Tristram, that's enough. Sit down."

"It was a record of everything my mother did to her."

The room gasped as one.

"Every entry with a pencil mark beside it was true. I checked each one. I wrote the date I first knew." His voice was thin, but it held. "My mother changed my wife's pills. She ordered the shrimp in the soup. She pushed her down our back stairs eleven months ago, and I stood behind her and watched."

"He's confused," Inez said, loudly now, to the tables. "Look at him. He has had a breakdown."

"I haven't," Tristram said. "I've had five years."

He looked straight at me.

"The ninety-nine were true. The hundredth line, the one I wrote in front of you all, was false. My mother told me what to write and stood at my shoulder while I did it."

Nobody coughed or moved.

"I called an ambulance before my wife took one bite, because I knew what was in the bowl. I sat in my chair and I watched her reach for her pen. I am going to say that under oath to anyone who asks, and I won't ask for anything back."
