He Called Himself Blind and Kept Me Poor, So I Let Him Watch Me Leave novel · Chapter 6 of 24

Chapter 6: Storm

Kelsey's plan came with a second glass of wine.

"Post the video," she said. "Tag his clients. Every studio that hired a blind man's work should know he lied about it."

"The video of what?"

"Of you, in the lobby, with him begging. It's already got two hundred thousand views, Brin. Somebody's cousin put it up."

I put my glass down.

"He was not begging. He was paying me back."

"With money he hid."

"I'm not going to wreck his business, Kelsey."

She looked at me for a second too long.

"Of course not," she said, and she smiled. "I just want you to get what you're owed."

That night the ice came in.

It hit Columbus around nine, and the whole of Grandview went dark at ten past.

Kelsey stood at her window with her phone flashlight and swore.

"My mother's got a generator in Dayton. I'm driving down. Come with me."

"The roads are glass."

"Then stay and freeze, I guess." She laughed, but she was already reaching for her keys. "Don't light candles. Don't leave the door open. I'll be back tomorrow night."

She was gone in four minutes.

I sat in a dark apartment in somebody else's pajamas with my breath showing.

I texted Hank, who I knew would not be asleep.

Power's out at Kelsey's. I'm fine.
